On Thursday, May 19, 2022, at approximately 9:20 pm, Golden Valley police officers responded to carjacking report in the 500 block of Utah Ave S in Golden Valley. The victim told officers he had just pulled into his driveway when a Black male holding a handgun and wearing a dark-colored ski mask that covered his face ordered the victim to give him everything, including his cellphone and keys to his black BMW. The suspect then fled the area. The victim was not injured during the auto theft.
Officers located the victim's phone, which was dumped in Minneapolis. The victim’s vehicle was eventually tracked through GPS services to North Minneapolis, where the Minneapolis Police Department found it unoccupied. The vehicle was towed back to the Golden Valley Police Department and processed by the Hennepin County Crime Lab.
Golden Valley police investigators are following up on all leads in this case and a similar previous case with the same suspect description and type of vehicle stolen.
“While both of these incidents appear to be isolated and random events, the public needs to be more aware of their surroundings at all times and try to limit the amount of cash or other personal items within your vehicles,” said Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green. “Also, ensuring that your technology devices are active will assist law enforcement in tracking and recovering stolen property.”
