Proper mowing does more than keep a lawn looking tidy. When done right, it helps grass grow healthier, keeps people and pets safe, and protects local waterways. Follow these tips to mow smart and keep your lawn in good shape.
Keep Mower Blades Sharp.
A clean cut reduces disease risk and keeps lawns looking green. Rotary mowers are more common and easier to maintain, but reel mowers provide a finer cut.
Mulch Your Clippings.
Leave clippings on the lawn to return nutrients and improve soil. Mulching mowers re-cut grass into fine pieces that break down quickly. Don’t use treated clippings as mulch elsewhere. Make sure to remove clippings from impervious areas such as sidewalks and driveways and never sweep excess clippings into the street.
Mow High And Often.
Maintain a height of at least 3 inches to shade weeds, encourage deep roots, and resist drought. Never remove more than one-third of the blade at a time. Raise the height slightly during hot, dry months.
Prioritize Safety.
Always read the mower manual and never remove safety features. Clear the lawn of debris before mowing. Wear sturdy shoes, use ear protection, and mow across slopes (not up and down). Keep kids and pets away.
Do Routine Maintenance.
Follow manufacturer guidelines to keep equipment in good shape. Sharpen blades regularly and keep safety shields or bagging attachments in place. Newer push-reel mowers are eco-friendly options for small yards.
Know When To Stop.
Keep mowing until grass growth stops, usually in late October. Proper late-season mowing reduces winter disease and pest issues. Bag or rake clippings during the first and last mow of the year.
