City Advances Community-Driven Public Safety Initiative

Current News Posted on March 21, 2025

Golden Valley’s Collaborative Solutions: Investing In Community Well-Being initiative embodies the City’s commitment to ensuring everyone in the community feels safe, accepted, and welcomed. Because public safety plays a big role, the City is focusing on enhancing public safety and well-being for all and being a leader in expanding how these services are delivered.

In 2021 the City was awarded a $250,000 Public Safety Reducing Harm Through Collaborative Solutions Grant from the Pohlad Family Foundation. Goals include:

  • innovating and transforming traditional approaches
  • to public safety by working with community
  • reducing harm and increasing racial equity in public safety
  • reducing the occurrence and severity of negative
  • encounters between law enforcement and the community

Collaborative Solutions aims to achieve these goals by:

  • providing training and development for public safety personnel
  • conducting a racial equity policy audit for the police handbook and getting community feedback on policy updates
  • engaging community to provide input on expanding public safety response services

In addition to starting the initiatives listed above, other examples of the City’s work in this area to date include embedding a social worker in the Police Department to provide additional services, reviewing and updating animal care and control procedures, and hosting employee engagement sessions to solicit input on police policies and public safety expanded response services.  .

The City is seeking community input on police policies through May.
