Winter Is Coming: Plowing Tips And Cold Weather Reminders

Current News Posted on December 11, 2024

Note the following to be ready for the cold months ahead.

Plowing And De-Icing

Crews begin plowing and de-icing priority areas (hills and main roads leading to State and County roads) to keep traffic flowing before moving to residential roads and cul-de-sacs. This includes intersections with high traffic volumes, school and pedestrian crossings, and other locations deemed hazardous by public works or police.

Fire Hydrant Clearing

After each snowfall, clear a 3-foot radius around your neighborhood fire hydrant. This will reduce the time it takes firefighters to hook up hoses if a fire occurs.

Private Property Snow Removal

Removing snow and ice from private property to a roadway, across a roadway, or onto a sidewalk, or adjacent property is prohibited by City Ordinance (Section 24-24) and State statute (169.42).

Garbage/Recycling Containers

Keep your garbage and recycling bins 3 feet behind the curb if it snows on collection day.

Other Considerations

  • To prevent heavy snow coming off plows from damaging your mailbox, make sure your mailbox is securely fastened and meets USPS requirements. The City will only replace or repair mailboxes that meet USPS standards and are directly

    hit by equipment.

  • Don't crowd plow trucks–give them extra room, especially at intersections where they often back up. For your safety, stay back 300 feet to ensure the driver can see your vehicle and apply de-icing chemicals.

  • Do not allow children to build snow forts near the road. These may get filled in or collapse as the plow truck drives by.

Parking Reminder

From Nov 1–March 31, parking is prohibited on Golden Valley public streets and alleys from 2–6 am daily. Parking is also prohibited on any public street after a snowfall of at least two inches until the snow has been plowed to the curb line.
