Weathering The Storm: Flood Safety And Preparedness

Current News Posted on April 09, 2025

Floods are the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the US, and they are often more deadly than tornadoes and hurricanes. In Minnesota, flooding was the cause of several disasters in 2019. Flash floods can develop in a matter of hours and can be especially dangerous at night.

Flood Safety Tips:

  • Before a flood: Have an emergency kit with 3 days’ worth of supplies and know your evacuation routes.
  • Driving: Never drive through standing or flowing water. Just 6 inches of water can cause you to lose control of your car.
  • Evacuate: If you are in a flood-prone area, move to higher ground immediately.

If you’re in a flood zone, it’s crucial to prepare in advance and stay informed about weather alerts.
