[ARCHIVED] City Offers Tips For Post-Storm Clean-Up

The spring storm that blew through the metro area May 11 downed trees/branches, caused power outages, and flooded streets in some areas. With more storms in the forecast May 12, the following information can help with recent and future storm-related issues.

What The City Is Doing Now

Last night, the Golden Valley Fire Department (GVFD) responded to emergency calls for downed power lines causing arcing, sparking, and minor tree fires. The City's Public Works Department was also out clearing roadways blocked by downed trees.

Today, the Fire and Public Works Departments are continuing to assess damage, respond to calls for downed lines, and clear and clean streets. Not all downed trees in streets can be removed yet as some are tangled in power lines. The City is working with Xcel Energy to remove the power lines so Public Works staff can safely remove the trees.

Storm Clean Up And Safety Tips

Power Outages and Issues

Golden Valley and many surrounding communities experienced power outages. To report an outage, or to receive outage information or restoration estimates, call Xcel Energy‘s outage line at 1-800-895-1999.

If you see a downed power line, stay away from it and call 911. Even if the lines appear to be “dead,” they can be turned back on and become “live” without warning. Golden Valley police and firefighters will assess the situation and secure the area.

If you are using a portable generator for power, it should be placed outdoors, at least five feet from doors and windows. Generators should not be used in attached garages, even with the garage door open, and fuel should be stored a safe distance away from the generator, not in the home. All homes should have carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home and within 10 feet of every sleeping area.

Street Flooding

After storms, Golden Valley crews monitor City storm sewer facilities and Bassett Creek to clear obstructions on a priority basis. Citizens can help by keeping catch basins clear of debris during spring and summer months, so water can drain from the streets. For public and personal safety purposes, don’t drive on flooded streets, and never drive around barricades. To report a flooded street that may be impassable, call 911.

Downed Trees and Branches

Golden Valley crews work to clear downed trees and branches from City streets and public right-of-way. To report a downed tree blocking a public street or sidewalk, call 911.

Downed and damaged trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner, and all resulting brush must be stored on your property until you can arrange for disposal. Dumping on public property is illegal and will result in fines.

As the City will not be offering an additional spring brush pickup, residents are encouraged to contact their garbage hauler or a licensed tree removal service. Brush can also be taken to a yard waste disposal site.

Property Damage

If your home is damaged in a storm, contact your insurance company and take photos of the damage as soon as possible. When hiring someone to do repairs on your property, be sure to work with a licensed contractor. It’s wise to get more than one bid, and always ask for a license, proof of insurance, and a business card (by law, all advertising and business cards must include a license number). Once you have a license number, you can verify current licensing with the Department of Labor and Industry (651-284-5065 or 1-800-342-5354).

Make sure your contractor obtains the proper building permits for the work they will be completing for you. If you’re doing the repairs yourself, apply for the building permits as soon as possible. Permit information and forms are available at the Golden Valley Inspections Department in City Hall or online.
