Broadband Fiber Optic Internet

Over the next few years, several companies will be working throughout Golden Valley to install fiber optic cables in City right-of-way and easements. Fiber internet, also known as broadband, is a private utility similar to gas and electric. High-speed fiber optic internet offers a new service option for residents and businesses throughout the community.

While these are not City of Golden Valley projects, all companies installing fiber optic are required to obtain right-of-way permits before their work begins.

Fiber Optic Internet Installation Process

There are multiple phases for underground fiber optic construction projects:

  1. First, Gopher State One Call (GSOC) tickets are submitted to locate private utilities such as gas, electric, and cable. These utilities are marked with flags and paint. Most residents will see some utility markings in the right-of-way or easement near their property. Fiber optic projects typically begin soon after the markings and flags appear.
  2. Next comes underground installation of conduit (duct for fiber) , along with construction of other related structures, which involves excavation and horizontal boring, also called directional drilling. This construction method requires equipment to be staged in the work area but allows for minimal disruption to the ground.
  3. When the conduit is in place, crews begin installing fiber cable in the conduit and splicing and connecting wires.
  4. To finish, contractors restore grass and other items that may be affected, such as sprinkler systems, invisible fences, asphalt, and concrete.
  5. After installation, residents may choose to contract with fiber companies that are equipped to provide internet services to their property.
