About

Emerald Ash Borer has infested thousands of ash trees in Golden Valley and decimated the City's tree canopy coverage over the last few years. This reduction in trees is impacting the community's resilience to climate change, bringing more extreme heat/less shade, decreased air quality, reduced carbon sequestration, and limiting the capacity for stormwater interception and uptake.

The Environmental Commission has a work plan that includes actions to explore and mitigate the effects of emerald ash borer and look for ways to help the community plant new trees, especially in areas experiencing a lack of investment in trees and green infrastructure. Planting trees is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

As part of this effort, the Environmental Commission recommended partnering with non-profit Tree Trust to sell discounted trees to the community through a lottery system with an equitable pricing structure. Pricing would be based on whether or not a property is located within an environmental justice priority area.
