Paws In The Park: Guidelines For Golden Valley Pet Owners

Current News Posted on January 13, 2026

While recreating in local parks, you may notice some new signage titled “Paws In The Park.” These signs highlight City laws regarding pets in public spaces and include direct references to the applicable sections of City code.

The following laws apply to all pet owners in Golden Valley:

Pets must be leashed at all times, except in designated, signed off-leash areas. (Golden Valley City Code Section 6-33

  • Leashes help prevent pets from disrupting wildlife and vegetation.
  • Non-retractable leashes are more visible, less likely to break, and keep your pet close while allowing those that may walk, run, or roll by to pass with comfort and without the threat of getting tangles.
  • Leashes protect your pet from getting into things that could be dangerous for them.

Pet waste must be immediately picked up and disposed of in a sanitary manner. (Golden Valley City Code Section 6-1

  • Pet waste contains bacteria, such as E Coli, that can cause illness in people, pets, and wildlife.
  • When pet waste is not picked up, rain can wash it into streams, rivers, and lakes.
  • Similar to yard waste, pet waste also contains nutrients that cause destructive algae blooms in lakes and streams and can make waterways unsafe for recreation.
