Snow Season Reminders

Current News Posted on December 05, 2025

Golden Valley Public Works is preparing for the winter season. Help keep the community safe by following the reminders below.

Plowing And De-Icing
Crews will clear and treat priority areas—such as hills, main roads, and high-traffic intersections—before moving to residential streets and cul-de-sacs. Priority areas also include school crossings and hazardous areas identified by the Public Works or Police Departments.

Fire Hydrants
Residents are asked to clear a 3-foot radius around fire hydrants after each snowfall so firefighters can connect hoses quickly during an emergency.

Private Property Snow Removal
It is against City ordinance and State law to push snow or ice from private property into or across a street, onto a sidewalk, or onto a neighboring property.

Garbage And Recycling
Place bins at least 3 feet behind the curb during snow events to allow plowing to the curbline.

Mailboxes
Ensure your mailbox meets USPS standards and is securely fastened to withstand plowing. The City replaces only those damaged by direct equipment contact. Mailboxes must be 6-8 inches from the curb, 41-45 inches high, with at least 2 feet of post in the ground.

Safety Around Snow Plows
Be sure to give plows extra room, especially at intersections. Stay back at least 300 feet so drivers can see your vehicle and apply de-icing materials safely. Remind children not to build snow forts near the road, where they may be filled in or collapse when plows pass.
