Fire Prevention Week Focuses On Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Current News Posted on October 04, 2025

Fire Prevention Week™ runs Oct 5 through 11, 2025, and this year’s theme, Charge Into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries In Your Home, focuses on the potential fire risks associated with the rechargeable batteries used in many common household devices.

From smartphones to laptops to e-bikes, headphones, and power tools, lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. While convenient and efficient, these batteries can catch fire or even explode if damaged or used incorrectly.

Follow These Key Tips

Buy only listed products.

When shopping for devices or batteries, look for labels from nationally recognized testing laboratories to ensure they meet safety standards. Be cautious with off-brand or untested items, especially those sold online.

Charge devices safely.

Use the charger that came with the device and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid charging devices on soft surfaces like beds or couches, and unplug them once fully charged.

Recycle responsibly.

Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or curbside recycling. Instead, take them to a certified battery recycling location. Visit www.call2recycle.org to find one near you. Hennepin County residents can safely dispose of batteries for free by taking them to the county drop-off facility at 8100 Jefferson Highway, Brooklyn Park, MN 55445.
