Fifteen percent of Golden Valley (more than 1,035 acres) is dedicated to parks and open space, and the City maintains nearly 50 miles of trails and numerous ball fields, courts, and activity areas. In addition, Golden Valley’s Parks & Recreation Department provides a variety of seasonal and year-long programs for people of all ages. If you’d like to have a hand in planning for the future of these parks, open spaces, and recreational activities, consider joining the Open Space and Recreation Commission (OSRC).
The OSRC advises, recommends, and assists the City Council in policies and plans related to open space needs, parks and recreation programs, trail systems, and Brookview Golf Course. More specifically, the OSRC develops and makes recommendations to maintain and update relevant sections of the City’s Comprehensive Plan, develops and periodically reviews additional policies and plans, updates assessments of current programs and future needs, and advises the Council on cooperative agreements, policies, and budget needs.
Ideal candidates for the OSRC are adaptable and enjoy enhancing recreation and keeping up with recreation trends. Appointments are made effective May 1 of each year. The City Council appoints nine regular members for three-year staggered terms and one youth member for a one-year term. Meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month, 6:30 pm, at Brookview.
Applications are due April 5. To learn more, visit the Open Space & Recreation Commission web page.
