In January 2023, the City filed a formal request to the Minnesota State Legislature for permission to hold a referendum authorizing a local sales tax. The revenue collected by the sales tax would stay inside Golden Valley to fund certain capital projects.
The sales tax in Golden Valley would be a 1.25 percent added tax charged on the gross receipts from retail sales in the city. The new tax would only be applicable to items that are currently taxable. Clothing and staple groceries are non-taxable. According to the Minnesota Department of Revenue, the tax would generate approximately $6.25 million each year over 30 years.
If approved by the legislature, the next step would be for Golden Valley voters to vote on the referendum at a general election in November.
