Golden Valley DEIC Announces MLK Human Rights Contest Winners

image1Golden Valley's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission (DEIC) recently announced two winners in the 2022 Martin Luther King Human Rights Contest.

The theme was “Community,” and students were asked to creatively respond the prompt, “Show us where you see love in your community, where all people are heard and feel important.”

Renee Woolever, a 7th grader at Hopkins North Junior High, redesigned the City logo (see top image). “I remade the City of Golden Valley logo to be more recent and more up to date with what has been going on,” she explained in her entry.

For example, Woolever made the word “Golden” the colors of an LGBT Pride flag, added an image of a fist representing the Black Lives Matter movement, added the hashtag #StopAsianHate, and more (see right).

owen ruzickaOwen Ruzicka, a 3rd grader at Meadowbrook Elementary, wrote an essay titled “Circle” (see bottom image). In the essay, Ruzicka described how he feels safe in a circle and how circles are a place for trust and are where people feel and show love.

“In a circle you are trusted with things that people don't just share with everyone,” Ruzicka said in his submission.

“Sometimes you are the one doing the sharing of things not just shared with anyone.”
