The Golden Valley Police Department (GVPD) is partnering with Lights On!, a program with the mission to build relationships between communities and law enforcement agencies.
Under the program, GVPD officers on traffic stops may provide a voucher for a free repair on mechanical problems with the vehicle rather than citing the driver.
Some common mechanical violations included burned-out lightbulbs, broken turn signals, and more.
Lights On! is free to voucher recipients and is supported by community in-kind and financial donations.
"The Golden Valley Police Department knows the value of positive community interactions," says Assistant Police Chief Alice White. "Having the opportunity to provide a fix to an equipment violation versus a citation is a deposit into our community bank account."
