In early January, the Golden Valley DEIC announced three winners of the 2023 Martin Luther King Human Rights Contest.
The contest is open to students in Grades K-12 who live in Golden Valley, attend a school in Golden Valley, or attend a Robbinsdale Area District or Hopkins District school. This year’s themes were Inclusion for pre-K and kindergarten, and Equality/Justice for Grades 1–12. Students were asked to submit any form of creative work, responding to a variety of King’s quotes.
Sondre Thoresen, a first grader at Eisenhower Elementary School, created a colorful depiction of Dr King.
Samuel Schwartzentruber, a fifth grader at Meadowbrook Elementary School, wrote a poem titled “Love Is The Only Thing Holding Us Together.”
DeAngelo Dungey, a ninth grader at Breck School, created a collage of Dr King quotes.
Winners received a cash prize and were recognized at the Jan 15 MLK Holiday Weekend of Service event hosted by Sweet Potato Comfort Pie. View all entries on the City website's DEIC page.
