At its May 17 meeting, the Golden Valley City Council proclaimed May 15–21 as Public Works Week in Golden Valley. Public works professionals focus on infrastructure, facilities, emergency management, and services that are vitally important to sustainable and resilient communities and the public health, high quality of life, and well-being of the people of Golden Valley.
In addition to maintaining infrastructure and facilities, the City's Public Works Department is also known to perform duckling rescue operations from time to time.
On Tue, May 17, the Golden Valley Police and Fire Departments were called to a sewer grate in Golden Valley to rescue a group of ducklings that fell inside. After determining the sewer was too cramped and potentially dangerous for officers and firefighters, the City's Public Works Department was called to assist. As public works staff are trained in managing situations in confined spaced with reduced oxygen levels and harmful gasses, two employees were able to successfully climb into the grate to rescue the ducklings and return them to their mother.
