The Golden Valley Fire Department (GVFD) will administer the oath of office to seven firefighters and present promotions to 10 others in a March promotional ceremony.
Fire Chief John Crelly will administer the oath of office to Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Schroeder, Fire Inspector Jennifer Murphy, and new recruits Kristian Bejarin, Elizabeth Grygar, Richard Johnson, Ian Planchon, and Piter Rodrigues.
Probationary Firefighters Andrea Hanson and Grant Lillvis will be promoted to the Apprentice level, while Ralph Brown, Spencer Specht, and Svetlana Vold will be promoted to Firefighter based on their experience. Apprentice Firefighters Kevin Jarta, Ed Jeffreys-Berns, Casey Johnson, Chad LaForge, and Brandon Operana, will be promoted to the Firefighter level. Dom Guzman and Jeff Piper will both be reappointed to Lieutenant.
New Recruits Head To School
Next up for the GVFD’s new recruits is the West Suburban Fire Academy (WSFA), where they will spend more than 200 hours in training specifically designed to prepare them to meet National Fire Protection Association standards.
Training includes a mixture of classroom time and hands-on exercises covering topics ranging from vehicle extrication to dealing with hazardous materials to, of course, firefighting.
Upon completion of WSFA in June, the new firefighters will have earned three state certifications—Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Hazardous Materials Operations. They then move on to earning their Emergency Medical Responder certification.
The WSFA is a multi-city cooperative training program between the Golden Valley, Plymouth, Maple Grove, and West Metro Fire Departments.
