Meet Golden Valley Firefighter Curtis Smith

Curtis Smith had always been intrigued by stories of helping others, whether told by friends in the Rocky Mountain fire rescue service or by others involved in crises like 9/11. "Sometimes bad things happen," he says. "I wanted to be part of the solution."

He made his wish come true by becoming a firefighter. Through the Golden Valley Fire Department, Smith says he's learned useful skills, gained confidence and a whole new base of friends, and discovered a unique form of therapy.

"I have a high-stress job and work long hours," Smith explains, "but when I come to drill, I always leave smiling." That comes from the fulfillment of learning new things alongside a great group of people he's come to trust and depend on, and discovering that "very few complications can't be corrected."
